MACPHAIL COMES TO READING. Following the Brooklyn Dodgers’ December 1940 purchase of the Reading Chicks of the Interstate League, the Dodgers president and general manager, Larry MacPhail (HOF, pictured at left), hired his 24-year-old son Lee MacPhail Jr. as the business manager of the team. To boost attendance for the renamed Brooks, Lee arranged for five different major-league teams to play games in Reading. The paid attendance for the games with the major-leaguers totaled $21,000, increasing the Brooks’ gate for 63 home dates to $61,000. Without the gate for the five exhibition games, the season would have been a financial disaster. (NBHOF.)
